Nikudofu

Nikudofu is a dish made with beef and tofu.

It is known as one of the popular dishes at shokudo (diner, set meal restaurant, or Japanese public restaurants) and izakaya (Japanese style pubs).

The strong seasoning goes especially well with rice and sake. In addition to beef (beef cobs, slices of beef) and tofu (momen or kinu tofu), onions, Japanese leeks, and mushrooms (shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, etc.) are often used.

Chopped onion and beef are simmered in soy sauce, sake, mirin, sugar, etc. When cooked, drained tofu is added and further simmered.

It is often prepared and eaten at home, and is popular as a side dish for rice or as an accompaniment to sake.

In addition to being prepared at home, it is also a staple menu item at Izakaya (Japanese-style pubs).

Some recipes call for pork instead of beef, some use “mentsuyu” instead of seasoning, and some add carrots, potatoes, shirataki, etc.

There are many different recipes depending on the household, the recipe maker, or the restaurant.
