Miso curry gyunyu ramen (味噌カレー牛乳ラーメン / Miso Curry Milk Ramen) is a local ramen noodle served in Aomori Prefecture. It is known as Aomori City’s soul food and Aomori City’s B gourmet food.

”Miso” is a fermented seasoning made from soybeans, rice, barley, and salt, and “Gyunyu” is the Japanese word for milk, so ‘Miso Curry Milk Ramen’ is a curry-flavored ramen with ‘miso’ and ‘milk’ in it.

Although it varies slightly from shop to shop, this ramen is made by adding milk and curry powder to miso-flavored soup, resulting in a milky flavor mixed with a curry-flavored miso taste. The main ingredients include bamboo shoots, chashu pork, wakame seaweed, bean sprouts, butter, etc.

At Aji-no Sapporo, which opened in Aomori City in 1968, junior high and high school students were initially adding ketchup, cola, mayonnaise, and other flavors to ramen just for fun, but the idea of adding milk and curry powder to miso ramen gradually became a hot topic, and in 1978, in response to customer demand, the owner introduced “Miso Curry Milk Ramen” as a menu item, which is said to be the origin of the restaurant.
